The Best Things to Do & See in Entrevaux.
The Train des Pignes.
This famous railroad has become a tourist attraction for its stunning views of the region and relatively quick access to some of the most beautiful but remote villages of the south of France. It leaves from the Gare de Chemin de Fer de Provence; reception can direct you.
Entrevaux is a stunning medieval fortified village, set between the Var River and a series of cliffs and mountains atop which sit the village’s famous citadel. The village is nearly unchanged since medieval times and strolling through its labyrinth streets is like walking back in time. There are many excellent restaurants, cafés and bars to be found in the maze of cobblestone alleys and streets. Entrance to the village is gained by crossing a defensive drawbridge and going through the imposing Royal Gate.
Built on a stone escarpment along a narrow rocky overhang, the Citadel can be reached by climbing up a paved, zigzagging path; it takes about 15 minutes to walk up, but the views along the way are truly extraordinary.
Located on what was the border between France and the Duchy of Savoy, this fortress has survived the trials and tribulations of many wars: victories, defeats, sieges, occupations, and has successfully protected the village for centuries.
You can explore the Citadel itself, and also climb up to the very top for magnificent views of the region, stretched out for miles and miles in every direction. Behind the citadel begin a number of hiking trails of various difficulties and lengths; information and maps can be found at the Tourism Office as you enter the town.
The Entrevaux cathedral is a mix between gothic architecture and baroque interior décor. This typical cathedral of the 17. century is perfectly maintained and built into the fortifications of the town. The large walnut door leads into a richly coloured and decorated interior.
