I’m sat writing this whilst looking at Facebook statuses such as “OMG IT’S SNOWING IN LONDON” and news articles about how the lightest bit of snow has caused the closure of the railway line between Barnes and Hounslow via Brentford. I immediately turn to my right and then look out on the magnificent view that our Gardens Hostel has onto Nice and the Mediterranean, on a glorious sunny day. I’ve often said that Christmas is better when it’s cold, dark and miserable, but Nice is changing that opinion. Christmas truly kicked off here last Friday with the opening of the Christmas Market on the central Place Massena square. The lights were switched on by a bunch of French Olympic swimming medalists, and all of a sudden festive spirit was in full swing in Nice. Here are just a few things going on in the area in the run-up to Christmas:
- Nice Christmas Market – 60 chalets serving a wide variety of products ranging from local handicraft to vin chaud and churros! Don’t forget to catch a ride on the big wheel for views over the city!
- Fête de la Lumière in Mouans-Sartoux – the start of the Christmas market in this town is celebrated with a colourful procession through the streets on Saturday 8th December. An event not to be missed!
- St Laurent du Var Christmas Celebrations – Christmas celebrations and festivities starting on 12th December up until Christmas Eve. To be found next to the Town Hall!
- Menton Christmas Festivities – travel east to Menton to see the town beautifully lit up! Also in the town is a frozen lake, so don’t forget your skates! On 23rd December there is also the Father Christmas Orchestra in the Jardens Biovès.
Above are just a few suggestions of a whole host of activities taking place in the run up to Christmas along the Côte d’Azur. Click on this link for further details of other celebrations on the French Riviera. Don’t forget to pop into the hostel café after spending hours at the Christmas market! We’re only a short walk away!
See you next week for an adventure in St-Paul-de-Vence!
